Information included with the Thumb Butte key chains: Thumb Butte, at 6514 feet, is one of Prescott’s most prolific landmarks. Formed about 14.8 million years ago, it is a volcanic outcrop made up of latite – a volcanic rock with alkali feldspar, plagioclase, and a low volume of quartz. To the Yavapai People, Thumb Butte was Nymit-gi-yaka, “Mountain Lion Lying Down.” Pioneers called it “the Sphinx,” and wrote legends about its powers.
