Information included with the Sedona, Arizona bookmarks: After 320 million years of changing ocean levels, the hard rock that began to form in Sedona had developed a thin layer of iron oxide. This thin layer turned the rocks into their trademark red color. Over time, Oak Creek began to form, and along with the other rivers in the area, started eroding the rock. These flowing waters naturally carved the monumental red rock sculptures we see today.

Information included with the Mount Moran, Wyoming bookmarks: Mount Moran, a 12,610 foot tall mountain in Grand Teton National Park, is named for Thomas Moran, an American landscape artist. Rising 6,000 ft. above Jackson Lake, it has several active glaciers. The geology of this area consists of some of the oldest rocks found, but is one of the youngest mountain ranges formed in North America. The Teton Range started to grow about 9 million years ago.

Information included with the Delicate Arch, Utah bookmarks: Delicate Arch is a 52 foot tall freestanding natural arch located in Arches National Park. The arch, one of the most widely recognized landmarks in Utah, is depicted on its license plates. This amazing structure was formed by the movement of underground salt beds beneath sandstone, in concert with surface events including water, ice, and erosion, that washed away the sandstone.

Information included with the Zion National Park, Utah bookmarks: This beautiful area stands at the intersection of three ecosystems; Mojave Desert, Colorado Plateau, and the Great Basin. The name “Zion” means “place of refuge”. For Native Americans, this land was a sacred and spiritual place, while Mormon pioneers saw it as a symbol of hope and perseverance. Today, with its vast canyons, mountains, and river, it has become a place of healing and reflection.
